This week I've been thinking about characters. It's often said that readers forget plots and pretty much everything else, but they remember characters!
It's weird, both as a writer and a reader, spending so much time thinking about people who simply do not exist. As a writer, it's my job to create believable, memorable characters, whether good, evil, or morally ambiguous. In fact, the darker ones are often the most identifiable. Who's got time for super clean-cut, unflawed people? Not me!
The best writers can make their creations feel truly alive. Have you ever put down a good book and ended up wondering what the characters are doing now? What happnened to them once the story ended? It's sad to think of them, stuffed away in a box like unloved toys.
We writers LOVE our characters, and we truly hope you do, too. Otherwise, we're failing at our jobs! I'm going to have a think about my top favourite fictional characters from books I've read, and I’ll post those soon.
